In the Stakes for Global Leadership, Whither Canada?

This event has been cancelled.

The Economist reported in 2007 that Canada is the 9th largest economy, the 7th most competitive nation, the 5th largest in market capitalization and 3rd in overall quality of the business environment. Yet even with these promising statistics, Canadian companies are in the "middle of the pack" compared to their competitors around the world. Measured against other nations in the G7, we fare rather poorly in the number and certainly in the size of our leading firms.

Sixteen Canadian companies appear in the 2007 "Fortune Global 500", which ranks by revenue. Our largest company in the Fortune list, The Royal Bank, enters well down at number 208 while every other G7 country has representation in the top 50 companies.  Further, although most Canadian public companies have a significant presence only in the home market, or the NAFTA zone, none ranks in the international top ten in its respective industry.

Looked at another way, if brand strength is considered to be an indicator of corporate health, none of the 100 leading brands on the planet, as reported by Business Week (August 6, 2007), are Canadian. Several much smaller developed countries, namely Switzerland, The Netherlands, Finland and Sweden have one or more internationally leading brands.

In spite of such a favourable economic environment, why are Canadian corporations underrepresented amongst the leaders? What are the key hurdles they face?  What strategies can move a company into the top ranks?

In this Strategic Leadership Forum’s Knowledge Café’s workshop-style session, attendees will explore and discuss the issues and challenges facing organizations stepping on to the world stage. We will also contemplate actionable solutions that would enable companies to compete more effectively.

Our Discussion Leaders that morning will be:
  • Dr. Donald E. Baer, Strategy Consultant, Incite Leadership
  • Donna Carmichael, Director of Marketing & Business Development, Grant Thornton LLP.
Café participants are leaders who bring to this round-table discussion their expertise from a variety of industries and a willingness to share their knowledge and experience with their peers. Whether you represent a "Fortune 500" company or have a vision to lead your company into the ranks of global leaders, this interactive session is an ideal opportunity for you to gather fresh ideas and new perspectives on issues that directly impact the future of your company.
